Statistics: Interesting figures but where do they come from and how accurate are they?
In the city where I work, the violent crime rate is up. However, that not because there are more actual incidents of violence, it's because everything is recorded correctly, hence the appearance of a rise in crime. Crime statistics are only a guide.
CCTV: Only any good if it's in the right area, pointing in the right direction and not obscured by trees or vandalised by the very people it's trying to watch. And try identifying people from a camera that's half a mile away from the incident and of poor quality, in the dark, not easy, I've tried. Maybe if more people did their civic duty and actually helped the Police instead of saying 'I don't really want to get involved' then there would be less reliance on CCTV.
Stop Search: Go away and read the rules on section 1 of PACE, Section 23 Misuse of drugs act etc and then come back and make another comment. There must be grounds for a search and if they are not there, it's an unlawful search and anything found would be inadmissible as evidence.
The government: They make the rules, the Police try, (with limited resources and funding and little or no respect or help from the people they are trying to protect), to uphold them.
Don't blame the Police when you clearly don't know how difficult the job is and how these things work.

The governments are getting ridiculous. The governments of all countries WITHOUT exception.
Ridiculous is the inability to realise that the society is evoluting, changing, whatever, and to preserve the means and the ways of doing things.
I asked here at Yahoo if more police would solve the problem of criminality.
I got almost only answers like yes, some people said that more police is part of the solution but no answer so far regarding the real solution. Police cannot prevent a first crime and a first succeeded crime will be repeated and maybe in an even graeter scale - we tend to repeat actions in which we succeeded.
Education is the only way to prevent a crime to be commited for the first time from somebody. Police just tries to stop crime.
You know, there are three kinds of people - there are then combinations of these possibilities, but generaly they are only three:
1 - People who starts things.
2 - People who keep things 'working' things - the burocrats are the best example.
and 3 - People who stop things - the army to stop an invasion;firemen to stop a fire or explosion consequences; the doctors, nurses,... to stop a illness or blood to run out from the body; and the Police to stop robbery, assaults, traffic chaos,... They are specialist in stoping things. So they cannot prevent crime, they stop it AFTER it happened.
'Prevention is better than cure' says the people in Germany, but everywhere else this is a graet truth.
So, what could prevent crime from happening? This would be The Solution.
Myself I think that Education is what it takes.
Ok, our societies are in a mess; parents are so busy making money that there is no time for the kids.
On another hand, the media report events where people escaped after commiting crimes - kids listen to this.
The media presents addvertisement - whay does a Coca-Cola corp. spent millions of dollars every year in publicity? Because it works.
The publicity on TV, Radio, Mags, papers, outdoors, etc, is an attempt to manipulate people's minds to 'have'; and nowadays not everybody gets the best job and many are even unemployed and their kids WANT to have what's been on adds.
So, what will happen? They will robb.
If they are not given morals at home, schools have to change and start giving it to them. By the way, the Educational System we are using is the very same that was designed for the industrial era, no wonder it is producing more unemployed people. Employment is something that appeared with the Industry 3 or 4 hundred years ago. Now you have computers, information and robotics.
The Educational System HAS TO CHANGE. Then, if they make a right one, you will have less criminality. (I stop here otherwise I have to tell you in which way it has to change and if you want to know, put the question. Maybe it happens that I see it and then I will have the Plasure to answer.)

The police don't make the rules.
And if you don't want to get mugged it is best to follow basic crime prevention advice such as not walking around with you ipod and mobile phone advertised for robbing; this is also common sense.
There are CCTV cameras everywhere and you are caught on CCTV about 250 times a day; but cameras are machine and only work if they are pointed in the right direction; If a robbery is going on on corner b and the camera is pointed at camera a it won't help much. Also cameras are usually run by the local council and are not controlled by the police.
If you're so worried about crimes levels why don't you do something and sign up to be a special, a PCSO, volunteer to man the front of th station offices taking crime reports or even join the police.

CCTV isn't everywhere and the people who generally commit this sort of crime are usually aware of where the CCTV cameras are.Police use CCTV ALL THE TIME (it drive you nuts sometimes trying to watch hours of CCTV). Even if you see an incident on CCTV it doesn't necessarily follow that you can find out who the person is.
The advice of not using IPODS etc in public in certain areas is a good one

No, the police are not getting ridiculous. They ARE ridiculous, power mad, moronic with a tendency to psychotic acts, brutal and without the ability to use reason and integrity. Concentrating on MOTORISTS, they can now stop, fine and give you penalty points for using a mobile phone, remember the case where they used a police helicopter which cost thousands of pounds to track and convict a woman driver for eating an apple whilst driving, how bloody ridiculous is that. Like this government they are out of control and a joke at the expense of us the British tax-paying public, that is unless you are of an ethnic origin, then they let you go because it cost to much to process and interpret!

Corporal punishment was done away with and lowlives can no longer be despised openly because of political correctness. Following a prison riot this week in which an officer received a fractured skull, an official stated 'Thank goodness none of the prisoners was hurt'. Meanwhile the government is as preoccupied as Essex man with sport etc. and local public servants spend their lives responding to statistical demands instead of being allowed to use their initiative. What the hell else does anyone expect?

It's not the police that are doing there jobs , it's the courts . The trouble is that this country has got too soft on justice. The whole system needs a revamp according to what we want the public want , after all this is our country and it about time that the govenment were reminded as to why they are there. If they are unable to carry out the wishes of the people, just why do we have them there.

Here in America we do have a stop and search it is called a "Terry" from the case Ohio v. Terry. Where they can under reasonable suspision and for officer saftey stop someone and "pat them down". They can not search them. If when they are patting them down for weapons they feel something that could be a gun or something then they can ask the person what it is and then remove it. If it could be dangerous. But, when driving around and you see a suspsious person you can get out and talk to them and then if they have further suspsion then they will do a Terry. But you can not just stop any random person and "search" them unless you have reasonable suspision.

Yes, the police really need to get their priorities. In Bristol at the moment they have three coppers in a park (College Green if you know Bristol) 24/7 from February to April, handing out dispersal orders to people not causing any trouble. They are appealing to get this period extended. Were there any problems there in the first place? NO! How much is this causing the taxpayer? Lots.
To the person that thinks we should double police numbers, please tell me where the money is going to come from. NHS? Education?

the problem in the UK is that we what to feel safe but don't what to feel that we are being watch our our privacy invaded.
yes we have CCTV but all a yob would do is go to a place he knows there is no CCTV and mug someone there.
giving advice on not using high value goods in public is just common sense, as most crime is opportunist crime. IE if a crock is waking along a street and see you using your laptop on a bench with no-one around he is going to have it.
yes in an ideal world we would be able to go where we want when we want and do what we want without the fear of crime.
