NEVER GET A 2ND HAND CAR SEAT!!!!!! All car seats that are on the market have been tested and approved. You can purchase on that is lower in cost and it will still be effective if you use it properly. remember to always follow age/weight/height restrictions and buckle your child in properly.

It really depends on the age/size of your baby but a well recommended seat for a very affordable price is the Cosco Scenera for about $40 at Target or Walmart. This seat will keep your child rear facing until 35 pounds and forward facing until 40 pounds (or until they grow out of the seat by height).

If you are unable to afford even $40 then you are likely receiving some sort of aid/welfare - talk to your case worker or local office about resources in your area.

Unless you know the history of a seat do not use a used/2nd had seat. From car-seat.org
Are used carseats safe to use?

If you are unable to verify that the carseat has never been involved in a crash, do not use it. Above that, you should inspect it carefully to make sure all the parts and labels are intact, and that there are no visible stress marks. You should also verify that the stickers with the manufacturer, model number and date of manufacture are legible. You must also have the owner's manual, or get a copy from the manufacturer. Finally, you need to make sure the used carseat has not been recalled (or if it has, that the appropriate corrections were made). Older seats may not meet current safety standards. Older seats may also be less convenient and more difficult to use, and may lack the latest safety features. If there is any doubt on the condition or history of a used carseat, please destroy it completely and permanently (using a saw or otherwise) and purchase a new one.

A carseat is one of the more important product. You need it to be safe. NEVER get one off someone for free, or even low cost. I wouldn't buy one out of the paper because you never know if it was in a car accident. Even some of the cheaper $100 ones are crap. If you can't afford a good car seat, how can you afford a baby in general?

I agree with the people that said DONT buy a cheap or a get a free car seat .. I understand that having a baby is'nt cheap but the car seat is one of the most important items you can have and should be very safe for your baby. How do you know if you got a free one that it has'nt been in a crash before you got it? if it has its not safe!

Your child is the most precious thing you'll ever have please dont risk there life by going cheap .. Money is nothing compared to your babies life ..

Most baby stores will layby!

There are lots of organizations that provide car seats and safety equipment for families that need assistance. Go to your local fire department or better police dept and ask. They will be able to to give you the info you need for your area to get a quality new seat. Fire and police are also trained to install seat properly and will do free checks to insure the safety of the fit and buckling and would have lists of any recalls. give them a call. Good luck

I agree with momma...never - NEVER - get a car seat 2nd hand. A child's life is far too important. Contact you local public health authority who will direct you to organizations in your area that can offer assistance.
