Also if there is a yearly limit - is it in any one year i.e.2007 or in the last twelve months?

A general 'rule of thumb' is that you can go in for 90 days and then stay out for 90 days. But if you are talking about coming in for a week at a time and then leaving, then there really isn't a direct rule I think.

The border guys want to make sure you are not abusing the VWP and are actually 'living' in the US for a substantial time. If you go in for a few weeks, out for one, in for a few weeks, out for one, over and over again, then they are going to start to wonder what you are up to. They might ask for an explanation.

I'd just play it safe and try to avoid raising suspicion.

Sorry I don't have anything official.

You can check the expat message board at http://britishexpats.com/forum/ as this issue sometimes comes up.

Hi under the VWP one can enter the USA as many times as one likes so long as one leaves the Continent.Canada,, Mexico, and adjacent islands counts towards the maximum of 90 days stay allowed under the program and the like are not considered leaving the continent.See link
