where can i get online , geniune royalty free photographs for a website of mine. (non commercial). or is there no such real service. i do not want to get on the wrong side of the law.

I find that iStockphoto is really good and it's cheap.
The images are good quality and there is a wide variety.
There is a full list of terms (but it's pretty self explanatory) so you shouldn't have any problems downloading the images for use on your web-site.

You might even try looking around sites like http://flickr.com for non-professional photos that you like.

Kindly asking an amateur photographer for the use of one of their photos with proper credit might be all it takes. Sometimes complements and credit are the only payment people need. The photographer gets an ego boost, and you end up with a photo that isn't all over the place to begin with.

if you go onto archives.org they'll probably have stuff. thats where i go to find public domain archive film footage and they seem to have images and soundclips and other stuff too. but its not all royalty free. you'll have to read the smallprint.
