Slang words in any language should be used sparingly and with caution. However, I still don't think it does any harm to know them. In a certain sense, you don't really know a language if you don't also know the slang and colloquial words in the language too - the ones which usually get left out of dictionaries.

No, not really. I think the slang of any language is only part of the whole means of understanding a language. Take English as our example, I think the following are also of importance for good learners: collocations, idioms, inferences, etymology, skimming and scanning, contexts, reading between the lines etc.
