I have a downs syndrome nephew (9yrs old), I also am not quite sure what you are asking. Are you writing a paper on self-sufficency for the learning disabled. If so, there are quite a few non-profit agencies in just about every city that can help you with info regarding teaching people to live on their own or work or live in group homes.

I guess that's about all I can say to help unless you have a more specific question. Good luck, and thanks for your interest in helping people with learning disabilities. It is very rewarding!!

there are quite a few programs available to people who have DS. they begin at birth.
birth to 3 program which offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and special education.
early intervention preschool which continues with the therapy, but the children are in a preschool setting and have a more in depth special education.
IROC program that has counselors who help people with disabilities to get into a work environment. they help with job placement, interviews, training at the job and follow-up.
group homes that are somewhat home based where individuals with developmental delays live together in small groups usually around 8-10 in a home that is structured around their needs and helps them live a semi-independent life.
goodwill industries offer training and help to individuals with delays as well as a work environment to gain work experience. that is all I can think of right now. hope this helps you somewhat.
