Go enroll in a Basic Obedience Course as soon as possible. Puppies can attend puppy classes as young as eight weeks. Continue with the different levels of Obedience Class. This is what I have done with my dogs, and they actually listen to important commands (off, come here, go lay down etc) and not just basics like sit, shake, etc. I would suggest a private trainer as opposed to classes offered at PetSmart or a similar store, they are usually cheaper, spend more one on one time with each student/dog, and offer private lessons in different settings (your home, your truck, etc) if needed. That is just my advice. Also, socialization would be important if you will be taking the dog with you. Before and during your Obedience Training, take him lots of places with you and get him exposed to LOTS of different environments, people , sounds, etc. A socialized dog will have the been there done that , already seen it attitude and not freak out over strange noises, etc as opposed to an unsocialized one. This is just basic advice. I would consult a pro, but I think it is a good idea to get a dog in your situation. I know a lot of guys that are long haul truckers that have dogs that go with them. It takes a little time and effort to train them right, but they all say that the companionship the dog offers is invaluable. GOOD LUCK

Hello,
I also own a pit bull, and have had them ever since I was a child. A pitbull as you know carries a certain stigma to the general public and requires an owner who can handle the looks and comments of those who are uneducated about the breed. If in fact you do decide to get one of these lovely pets, training classes are very important not only for the safety of the dog, but to avoid any kind of legal problems if someone thinks your dog is "vicious". Also, socialize the dog with as many animals and people as you can when the dog is a pup. An unsocialized Pit bull is a danger to the public and to other dogs. Remember.....Training classes, training classes, training classes.....Socialize, socialize, socialize....and more socialization.....A well mannered Pit is a pleasant companion...A pit out of control is a nightmare. Also...as with any dog, do not beat these animals, They are very in tuned with the owners wishes, you just need to learn how to relay your wishes....."training classes"....Good luck and be careful where you get the puppy from..Genetics obviously plays a major role in your dogs overall outcome. If it is aggressive to other dogs....this is part of the makeup of the dog, remember this.

The most important thing you should do is socialize your dog. After he's had a few series of vaccinations, take him around lots of babies, children, old people, cats, dogs and anything else you can think of. Take him to lots of different types of places too.
Puppy classes are a must, as well. They will guide you in training your dog to follow commands. For the most part, that's accomplished with lots of repetition and positive feedback. Learning should be fun, so avoid hitting or raising your voice when training your puppy. He or she will respond much better to praise.

If you are very firm, and discipline your puppy when he needs it (properly, not violently) then he will understand that you are the leader of the pack. If you are dominant and always make sure he knows that you are in charge, but also loving and give lots of positive reinforcement as well.. than he will love you desperately and want to please you as much as he can. And therefor, will follow your commands.

if you want it to be a nice loving dog, keep it around people. if you want it to be a protective dog, then keep away from people and on a chain, if your training it to fight, then get it a cat and dont feed it for a few days....pit bulls are loving dogs, its the owners who make them the monsters. just show it alot of love, there purrty much just like any other dog.......
