It is a phenomenon seen in heterodyning where a coherrent detection mixer operates like a Hilbert transformer: That is the two signals reaching the RF- and the LO-port of the mixer are of the same frequency but of 90 degree offset in phase, causing the mixer to generate a minimal IF signal output.
