In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful...the Best Knower.
If I take the position that "whatever I can observe, I am not that", then what, exactly, am I, since I can observe my surroundings, my body and its functions, and even my thoughts? If I am neither of these, what am I?
If it is true that the "I" sees all but itself, then is "self-awareness" possible?

Your human body is something you cannot deny and therefore your identity is established. Your parents and family knew who you were when you were born and gave you a name that would follow you all the days of your earthly life. And certainly Allah knew you before birth and after it. So those 2 sources of both divine and earthly have you identified in physical form.
That position then is not true in those instances I just cited.
What exactly are you? The position is "what others cannot observe about you is who you are". Your "self awareness" is what others cannot observe or see about you

Here's the real answer:

Only with Our Creator's Love and Peace will we be Truely Free!

You dont have enough faith, your trusting your reason. To change you can stop trying to figure out everything and start living. Go help people and do good to all men. You will find that to be a help for others is a wonderful reason to be alive. Maybe your here on earth to help bring hope to maybe just one person. Start living a life by faith and you will be happy like i am.

You are individual spirit soul, immutable, indestructible, eternal. The soul is situated in the heart, and its energy is spread over the body as consciousness.
Since you can observe only the material creation, it is to be understood that you are not material in nature, but spiritual. Of the material, nothing is permanent. Of the spiritual, there is no end.

We all need to take a good look at ourselves and exaime who we are and what we stand for. We need to see that part within us that is not very flattering, but non the less, truth. We need to seek change where necessary, as we acknowlegde our own weakness and sin.

a soul in the flesh among many...and yet an anomaly in your individual consciousness and nuances, from all other humans. self awareness is life...the soul is both the eye and the "i". as long as you are alive the soul is our "self awareness" even when we are unconscious of it.
