I just found out I made a little bit of money in 2005 because I was in school and I didn't know I had any income. I'm doing a paper filing and I have an IRS 1040 form. I wanted to know if I would need a separate CA one also.

Yes you would file a CA 540 or (540A if youre eligible for the short form.)

Did you have enough income to file? Was it more than $5,000? If not you don't have to file federal, unless you had tax withheld. Then you will want to file to get it back.
