there's a lot of things you can buy in thailand 1) gold/jewelries...the best place is at Chinatown located at Yaowarat Road or MBK (short for MahBoonKrong) beside Pratumwan Princess Hotel 2) Thai Silk ...get it at Jim Thompson at Surawong Road 3) clothes at Platinum Center, Krung Thong Plaza, Baiyoke Towers I &2 located at Petchaburi Road & Pratunam 4) bags if imitation you can get it at Pratunam...beside Baiyoke Tower...the store's name is ProLeather...you can ask the salesperson where you can get different kinds of imitation designer bags...4) if you want the original ones..you can get it at Emporium Dept. Store at Sukhumvit Road, Gaysorn Plaza, Central Dept. Store Chidlom, Central World Center (i think) and lastly at Siam Paragon...most of these department stores are just next to each other. If you want souvenirs or home decors...you should visit the weekend market at Chatuchak...take the sky train going to MoChitr and then you can find the best bargain there but most of the time its too crowded and very hot. Lastly, if you don't want to move around that much...you can get most of these things at MBK or Mahboonkrong...its a little bit higher but more convenient for you...gold prices are the same everywhere except it depends on the quality and workmanship. Welcome to Thailand and I hope you will enjoy your stay. Sawadee Ka.

Depends on what you want to buy. Thailand produce Nikon Digital Camera, Toyota, Sony, Samsung and many other products. Many Japanese and Korean electronic goods are produce here and when they are on sale, they're extremely cheap. Thailand is also one of the world largest exporters of foods and clothing, so they're also abandon and cheap. There's a street running from Mabonkrong Centre through Pleonjit road and Shukumvit road that there are shopping centre one after another; i.e. Mabonkrong itself, Siam Sqaure, Siam Centre, Siam Paragon, Central world, Sogo, Central Chidlom, Gysorn Plaza, and the Emporium where you can buy all kinds of things and it will take you a couple of weeks to cover them all.
There's also a flea market called Jaturjak (known as JJ) which sell all items at really cheap price, but requiring bargaining (could be fun). At JJ, you'll find clothing, foods, handicrafts, animal pets (live birds, rabits, dogs, etc.), and also plants.
I'm a local and went recently on a buying spree that had been very harmful to my credit cards.
After all those buying, you may want to visit the beach I recommend Cha-am, Hua Hin, Khoa Samed, or if you have more time, Phuket, Samui and the PP Island. The north and the north east also offer nice mountain resort, especially in the northeast at Khao Yai where you find an open national park with live wild animals like tigers, elephants, deers and monkeys in the wild (mostly deers and monkeys).
Have fun and enjoy Thailand.

Anything made of silk, casual clothing(men's and women's), some dress clothing, and wood carvings.
Where to shop? Jim Thompson's stores are mentioned by the others, I shopped there and they are nice and expensive by Thai standards. By all means go into one. There is one convenient located in the Central World Plaza or World Trade Center and in Silom area.
For clothing, try Platinum Fashion Mall on Ploenchit or MBK Center or Mah Boom Khram Center at the National Stadium exit of the skytrain. I find that MBK Center is a popular place for younger people to buy. Jean, t-shirts, cell phones, perfumes, personal products, cds, etc. All around stuff even furniture. There is an OTOP store or One Tambon One Product store, these are products from the other areas of Thailand. Nice things for a good price. Sometimes you can find some nice silk pillows, scarves, etc. there. It is located near the taxi stand in the first floor rear of the MBK
There is also the weekend flea market, Chatuchak market on Sat. and Sun. at the Chatuchak exit of the subway.

The above website is a listing of the main shopping malls. The Siam centers, Paragon, etc. have all gone high end. Nice to see, too expensive to buy.
Central World Center is / was just remodeled.
Pratunam area or Watergate is the clothing district. Just a couple blocks from MBK and Siam centers.
Make sure you get a map of Bangkok somehow. I have not seen them in the airport the last few times I have been there. Ask your concierge for one. Or buy one before you leave. Find a small light one. That is all you need.
Good luck

I got my cell phone there and saved about 150 bucks but then I had to switch providers back in the states and that cost me 100. I like the clothes, tailor made suits, dress shoes. Got a lap top and I think it was about the same as it would be here. Jewelry for sure but don't get taken.
