The majority of reasons, I've heard for the beliefs of agnostics and atheists, is rooted in a perspective of the universe which manifests before us. At the same time, many self-proclaimed agnostics and atheists hold their views because they find difficulty accepting particular beliefs and philosophies against personal moral convictions. Why does this almost always translate to immorality in the Christian view?

Also, with all of the selfishness, hate, greed, and negligence that exists in humanity that man can supposedly be redeemed of, how is DOUBT the only impirically punishable crime in the afterlife?

The greater side of my intuition tells me that doubt is not "evil" but is infact a defense mechanism. We as human beings need doubt, otherwise everyone would be reading "The Star" magazine and believing it or getting duped by salesmen or even mugged and murdered by untrustworthy dangerous people. I can't accept a philosophy that vilifies doubt. I do believe there are times when doubt can be a disadvantage in life but I can't accept the explanation that doubt is evil. I also do not believe that knowledge is evil as I have heard in the past. Knowledge is what we depend on to make decisions. We depend on the expertise of so many people in a society for our survival, so to say knowledge is evil is a life threatoning ideology. Although, what someone does with knowledge can be evil such as terrorists with knowledge of building structures or bomb building but by itself its neutral. Knowledge is also the only way to relieve one's doubt.

doubt is not the punishable crime in fact it is the lack of willing ness to have a relationship with the creator. as a christian there is often a doubt of wether or not God is real but it is through Faith which even though you have doubts you still press on and make a decision to have a relationship with God. immorality is not what the bible is talking about when it says eternal life it actually means the true knowledge and a never ending separation from christ in our hearts.

I call it "Idealized Ignorance". The notion that critical thought that clashes with religious dogma is somehow "evil". This tends to lead people to actively campaign against critical analysis and the results thereof. Example: The Christian response to the Theory of Evolution. A theory that has been tested, modified, and proven accurate for the past 150 years. Yet anything that even hints at the ToE being fact is ignored, smeared, or otherwise rejected. Why? Because despite the evidence supporting it, it runs head-on into a literal interpetation of Genesis.

Evidently the Christian's god has a very, very tender ego. Hatred, fear, and selfishness are apparently only minor things in God's eyes (never mind that a great deal of human misery flowers from them) but doubt is, to him, so monstrous that it MUST BE PUNISHED FOR ETERNITY! I find the notion of such an extremely human and unattractive trait in a supposedly beyond-human entity to be laughable and/or pathetic. If there is a God, and God is in fact this insanely jealous, the he does not deserve worship. Plainly his own creations are morally superior to such a being.

There are two ways to direct yourself morally. One is by rules. This is usually an immature mind that does not have the faculties of accurate self reflection.

The other form of morality is more sophisticated in that it knows by experience (imagined or real) why something is wrong.

My complaint with most 'atheists' is that they usually fit into the second category, but they just sort of give up once they have some form of working morality. There is nothing pushing them deeper into the (in my opinion) more profound aspects of morality.

Morality clears the mind. You can take that lightly, but through experience, I can tell you it is *the* reason to act morally and to pursue a deeper morality.

logical thought, doubt, rationality are NOT controllable with myths and a call for faith beyond understanding.
Calling anyone who had or embraced having other than christian religious views a heretic, immoral or otherwise 'evil' has long been the practice of this religion which is based on lies, falsifications and control issues.

A person can be redeemed of doubt just as sure as they can be redeemed of the other sins you mentioned. People who never repent of their selfishness, greed and hate cannot be saved. If doubt comes before faith, faith will then be stronger than if it were never questioned. Jesus died to forgive all sins including non-belief. Just keep questioning and I pray the answers will lead you to God.

The Word says "whatsoever is not of faith is sin" - I believe "doubt" falls into that category. It is one thing to "question" for sake of understanding and knowledge. It is another to say NO to your Creator. If you "doubt" that there is a God at all - then there is no salvation for your soul....for "you must believe that He IS, and that He is a REWARDER of those that diligently seek HIM." It is not about the "degree" of sin in our eyes, it is about the fact that sin separates from God ---- and "doubt" is a huge separator.

1) We are all immoral.
2) We can seem moral to eachother, by we are not in God's eyes moral at all.
3) I am not one of those Christians that think that morality is anything to pursue.
4) I am a Christian because I trust God, and his promise is that he does the changing in me by his Spirit. I do not attempt to be moral, but I do attempt to trust him and he brings me to change. That change may appear to be 'moral', but it is never my aim to be moral. My aim is to trust God through Jesus Christ.
