Price honestly depends on the area where you have it done. I've had tats done in the rural US, the DC metro area, and Ontario/Toronto. The prices have gone all over the place! In some places, you can even get cute tattoos on "Today's Special" boards, complete with designs. I got the rose on my ankle for my husband as a "Today's Special" from the board for only about $35 US. I also got a gorgeous piece on my back for about CAD $150, but I also got jacked for $80 US when I got my nose pierced in 1998 in Washington DC. For the same tat on my back, I was quoted CAD$150 in rural Ontario, CAD$250 in downtown Toronto, and US$375 in Maryland. Try to go outside of a major city or metropolis for the best pricing. It really is subjective to the artist, the colours in the piece, the size, and the detail.

As for designs, try http://www.tattoodles.com, or just images.google.com and type in "Tattoo Flash," along with any other words you want, like heart, angel, rose, etc. The pictures you see at tattoo parlours are called flash. For something cute, young, and fun, consider lips, a heart, a rose, or something very neutral for your hip. Bear in mind that you WILL have this tattoo the rest of your life. Will you *really* think Tweety Bird was such a great choice when you're eighty?!? Hehehe. ;) Good luck and happy inking!

Depending on what you want done and how much detail, the price follows. Something like a Japanese character about 1.5 inches in a solid color could be about $60. Before getting a tattoo, look at the cleanliness of the place and how they practices safety. You shouldn't see used items laying around. They should have safety policies posted. Also look at the artist's portfolio and detail of his/her work. The lines of the tattoos should be clean and the shading should be seamless. Review how well the artist used their skills. Heck... interview the artist! You don't want an apprentice. The artist should recommend fragrance-free lotions (Lubriderm, possibly) to keep the tattoo from drying out and peeling. Get a tattoo that means something to you. Oh, the more fat in an area of the tattoo, the more it will hurt. Say, your actual hip, that's a sensitive area. Beware if you're getting shading done. Go to a reputable studio! They don't play games when it comes to safety. If you drink alcohol before going to get a tat, they will tell you to come back. Alcohol thins your blood. Tattooing can draw blood. Your blood will not clot-- so you'll just bleed longer than normal. Go there sober.

With all that... good luck!

Check with local or respected tattoo parlors in your area (ask around for that). Ask them about prices and most of the time, they tend to have websites. It's really important that you check an artist's portfolio before deciding anything.

my favorite tattoo site is http://www.ratemyink.com
and i don't know what you consider to be a small tattoo. the only person you can get to tell you a price would be the artist. it depends on if they charge by the piece or the hour.
