I bring this up because of that valtrex commercial. If someone I was dating told me they had herpes, I'd get out quicker than a kid at michael jackson's house. My wife said i'm narrow minded and that's not how the real world is, if you loved them, it wouldn't matter......what would you do in the real world?

I think the same thing when I watch those commercials, if you know they have herpes then don't have sex with them! But I don't like your joke about MJ those were false allegations!!

That isn't narrow minded at all. It's wildly hypocritical to say that telling is the responsible thing to do (and it is) and yet judge others for using that information to protect themselves. Does she feel the same way about HIV? This whole notion that everything relies on 'love' is a crock and always has been. The sensation of falling in love is a biochemical response that drives us to mate. If it were a permanent condition, sexually transmitted diseases would vanish in a generation. So would divorce.

Herpes is incurable and is no small matter. If you don't want to be infected, it will limit your intimate behavior. Think about it--that's a real sacrifice. Otherwise, you will get infected. What happens when for some reason you break up? Reason dictates that you will, several times in fact even if you do eventually marry for life. Then you're stuck telling all your future prospects and constraining your behavior. The latter isn't a bad idea in any case. But if you get married, you may as well throw caution to the winds and assume you're going to be infected. Wrapping yourself in latex everytime you approach your partner is no way to sustain a marriage. Not everyone wants to look forward to that prospect, and that isn't selfish in the least.

And then there's the very real issue of pregnancy and childbirth. Herpes is no small matter because it can cause permanent disability or death if transmitted to an infant. No, you aren't narrow minded at all and yes, that's how the real world is. I was married (now widowed) when the whole herpes thing became an issue back in the early 80s. They called it "the new leprosy". We agreed that we were very fortunate to have found each other and not have to deal with that. You may be blunt and undiplomatic, but you're a realist.

Yes I'd date someone with herpes...dating doesn't mean having sex. Narrow minded isn't the word I would use...air headed maybe. Or even brainless twit...

life is a series of pulls back and forth. you want to do one thing, but you are bound to do something else. something hurts you, yet you know it shouldnt. you take certain things for granted, even when you know you should never take anything for granted. a tension of opposites, like a pull on a rubber band. and most of us live somehwere in the middle. sounds like a wrestling match, so which side wins?

love wins. love always win

Honestly, I wouldn't want to be in that relationship. However, ppl know that there are ppl who wouldn't want to be in a relationship w/ somone with an STD if they don't have that same STD already...so they don't tell them. Sucks doesn't it?

I am just Human ... we aren't god ... so knowing that it's bad to ostracize another I guess I will not want to go further straightaway.

So if your wife says you are narrow minded, so am I.
