An apprenticeship means that you are going to learn all this is to know about tattooing from someone in the industry. This person, once you are contracted, will let you know what you need and from where. Not likely from suppliers that will sell to scratchers.

Dont worry about the machine just yet, if you havent even started.

It will take months of watching, drawing and painstakingly learning technique and application before you will even get to touch a machine. A good teacher will let you have a go with theirs first to see hwo you want it set up. (If theyre not good at machine mechanics they may not know the difference however). Sounds a little suspicious that he "wont" tell you. It may be that you're just not ready yet to have one and need to hold your horses a bit.

When you do get to buying your machines DONT GO CHEAP. An artist really is only as good as their tools. anything below $150 is really not worth looking at unless you want to replace everything. You will need to know if your machines match your power supply as well. You may need to run a bigger capacitor than what it is supplied with. Stuff like this needs to be learned before you get a machine. Often if you tinker with it not knowing any different you can screw it up forever.

Final note DO NOT EBAY!!!! ebay is every artists dump for trash they have messed up and cannot fix, it will still run but you can bet your *** that the little niggling problem that just keeps screwing you up and you cant find is what they messed with.

Usually the store that sells the machine will sell you the ink. Other things you need will be:
1)Shaver for shaving the hairs
2) Gloves
3) Autoclave machine to sterilize the needles (if not provided)
4) Needles
5) Diluted alcohol
6) paper towel
7) Bandages/plaster
8) mask to cover the mouth-not necessary
9) protective eye wear-not necessary
10) tracing paper/pen/pencil/soluble markers

If he owns a tattoo shop then I suppose the machine+ink will do.
