I did not realize the multicultural audience of yahoo answers - sorry for the lack of clarification. My question is specific to driving in the US, but I am sure it is applicable to any country.

To be more specific about my question - why do people think the way "me again" thinks? It is not about you. It is about the flow of traffic, which impacts everybody on the road. You are the problem. And put on your brakes to cause an accident? That is the logic of a person with a third grade education. The only way a person would be your "b...." for life is if you were seriously injured. Is it worth it? As an educated person put it - the left lane is the passing lane. You have no reason to be in that lane if you are not passing somebody.

The same reason people do all the other stupid things on the road. They're human. You can't change them all. Just try to be patient and inform the ones around you of any useful information and hope to change some for the better.

In PA the left lane is generally the faster lane and not just for passing. We have massive amounts of truck traffic and many times it is better to stay in that left lane. I'll say this: I go 10-15 mph over the speed limit and if some little punk comes up behind me and starts tailing, I have no problem letting off the gas and tapping the brakes. I don't own the road but neither do you. So stop being so damn rude and impatient. You'll get there. Seriously, as stupid as people drive now, cell phones, eating, applying makeup,
SPEEDING!
It's a wonder that there aren't wrecks every couple of miles. I think the ultimate solution is to have computer controlled smart cars. No speeding, getting lost or road rage :)

These people are just idiots! I usually drive more than fast enough to stay in the left lane, but if someone is coming up on me and going faster, I get out of their way - regardless of how fast or slow I'm going.
However, I do have a big problem with tailgaters. If I'm only going 50 mph in the left lane and don't move over, it is because the guy in front of me is also going 50, so there is just nothing I can do about it. I am not going to tailgate the slowpoke in front of me, and I'm not switching lanes just for you, because I'm going as fast as I can. Don't tailgate me - if you are in such a hurry, figure out another way to pass me.
If you try to tailgate me, I'll take my foot off the gas for awhile and gradually slow down. Most likely I'll give you another chance and speed up to see if you got the message. If you still are tailgating, you had your chance and blew it. Now I take my foot off the gas petal until you go around me, and getting around me can get very difficult as my car is slowing down and traffic in the right and center lanes are zooming by at full speed. If necessary, I'll slow my car to 10-20 mph or less in the left lane of a busy highway. That will teach you a lesson. So don't be a jerk, don't tailgate, and drive safely.
(Please note that if you try doing what I do to tailgaters, have your foot ready on the break petal as the tailgater passes you and tries to cut you off and cause an accident. These people are sick maniacs!)

Sometimes I do think people skipped the lesson about the left lane being the fast lane on the highway. Especially aggravating when you see they're on a cell phone or obliviously yakking to a passenger.
Having said that, there are also those drivers who come close enough behind to give you a colonoscopy, when you're doing more than the speed limit to begin with- not naming names or anything.

the left lane isn't the fast lane- it is the PASSING lane- so someone missed the lesson on that. no one should travel in the left lane- it is for passing or if there is a left exit it is for exiting. if they are sitting in it they just aren't paying attention or don't know the rules of the road.

Next time you pass these people in the right lane take a look at them. Most of them appear to be idiots or stoners.

Because we don't have a rigorous "Recht Fahren" or right driving law like the German roadways use. If you aren't passing, you better not be in the right lane dawdling.
We need a law like that, they say it provokes incidents of road rage because people get so frustrated with the slow drivers blocking the fast lane.

I will happily move over if I am going under the speed limit. If I am going at or above the speed limit you can go around me, you worthless puke. By the way, if you tailgate me I will pull my emergency brake so you hit me. Then you will be my biatch for life. Is that how you want to play it?
