I thought courting was what happened before you started dating, but a vague statement made by someone who was answering a question on this board made me think other wise.

Sarah K. - Really? Wow, I'm a Christian and I've NEVER heard of that! That's crazy. Dating doesn't = sex! What I learned is dating's ok, but no sex...and I agree with that for many reasons (click here for the reasons http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AsQ8DHHGY0NdwfFlegSJP4Hsy6IX?qid=20070301205841AAx849r&show=7#profile-info-gV6kswJ9aa) I also, heard dating is spending time with the guy U like. If a dating relationship evolves in to a marriage then great. If not then ok. However, I’ve been hearing lately that’s courting and dating’s something different. I asked this question to find out how true that really is.

There's "Christian courtship" which is what "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" by Joshua Harris promotes... a lot of churches are doing a lot of brainwashing into making teens believe that dating = sex, so is a sinful activity. I've heard it said that courtship was dating with marriage in mind. It depends on who you ask, but Christian youth groups seem to have taken over the term lately. (I read that book, but ended up dating later on... just because you go to the movies or get surf'n'turf with someone doesn't mean that you owe them sex.)

The difference is: Dating is to just go out, get to know each other, see how you get along. Courting is when a guy is seriously looking for the one to marry, and "dates" the girl. Getting to know her, her getting to know him, talking marriage, what each other is looking for and wanting in a marriage, children, etc. Making plans for the future together. It's more involved than just "dating" a person. I hope this helps answer your question. Take care.
