In California here is the process (I just purchased my first handgun six months ago).
Go into the gun dealer and find one you want. At this point, you'll fill out some paperwork for your background check, pay for the gun (or make payment arrangements), and take a handgun safety quiz(Handbook to read over is linked below). Read this handbook and take chapter quizes and you'll be prepared for the test. This test gives you a Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC). You will also need to provide proof of residency that shows you live where you say you do (Utility bill, vehicle registration, etc).
You will then have to wait ten days to take possession of your firearm. At the end of this waiting period, when you go in to pick up your firearm, you will be shown and have to repeat a safety demonstration with your gun. This demonstration shows that you know how to load and unload your gun safely, and make sure it is unloaded at the end. An explination of this demonstration is also included in the handbook linked too below. Hopefully this is enough information.

I'm pretty sure getting a handgun in California is gonna be a pain you will probably have to get permits and wait forever.

Okay, you need to get your permit for it here in Cali. It can take awhile to get, though. When you buy handgun, you need to show ID if asked, along with the permit, if asked.

You just have to walk into a gun store and purchase a gun. You won't get it right away, since they run a background check. It will take seven days (at least it did back when I lived there).

It depends on your state. In North Carolina you have to fill out a pistol purchase permit request from your local sheriff. Wait 5 days and pick up a permit, which you can use to buy one pistol.
The easiest thing to do is go to your local gun store. Tell them you are interested in purchasing a pistol and wanted to find out about the process.
It sounds like California has a complicated process.
