Give her/him something as sturdy and solid to scratch as the furniture or carpet. I found this awesome devise, it's a piece of carpet attached to a board that slides under the corner of a sofa/bed. My cats no longer scratch the sofa, just the post. I got it at petsmart, but haven't seen anymore there since I purchased it. Here is the link to the site that has a similar item, but on this site it's pretty pricey, mine was only $20... http://www.cataround.com/ ********I found the exact item I have... it's a Scratchaway... here's the website, it's 35 with shipping and handling! Seriously the best item ever!http://www.birminghamind.com/Scratchaway/index.html *************
You can also take tape and put the sticky side up on the sofa, they won't like the sticy feeling on their paws.

Other than that, you have to find something that will have the same support and sturdyness as the floor or sofa... I've heard of sprays and stuff, but they haven't worked for me, my kitty needs to scratch, it's good for her claws. An alternative is the only real solution.

Good luck!!

Forget scratching posts. The reason you cat is scratching in the house is probably one of two reasons. Firstly it can't get outside. Cats like to scratch and if you cat has outside access it can scratch the trees, fences or decking. Try to encourage it to use the same area. The second reason could be insecurity. It feels anxious and is marking its territory. Give it a lot of fussing, but not when it's just raked your furniture!

There's this thing called SOFT PAWS. They are little plastic covers for the claws of cats. It doesn't hurt the cat, but it saves the carpet and furniture. You can get SOFT PAWS at most pet stores and online catalog stores. It might be a good idea to invest in a scratching post, but one of those big ones with crawling stuff too. That will keep the cat so occupied he/she will not have time to scratch your furniture or carpet, it will have its own scratching post.

Your cat needs a cat tree if he doesn't have one. When he starts scratching anything besides it, take him over to his tree and simulate the scratching with his paws.
Cats loves their trees in general and will spontaneously go to it when they need to scratch.
You can also spray him with water when he misbehaves but cats are very stubborn and it will only work for a short time. I think this is the best solution. It worked for me. He really needed a place of his own to do it.

Try a spray bottle. When ever she starts to scratch something, give her a little squirt. Or throw her outside.

Get a pet oder killer, get a skratching, post and some catnip, use the oder killer on anything you don't want torn up, there's also sprays on the market that keep pets away from the area .
