A very good question, well posited.

I agree that prejudice begins with ignorance. Often our perceptions are based on a personal viewpoint which is based on ignorance of the facts. To understand another's viewpoint we must accept that that there are differences and learn the facts to truly find common ground.

It is my experience that there is more common ground than differences and those differences are minor and unsubstantial. Differences make for interesting diversity and can be the beginnings of true tolerance and friendship. Just because other's do things differently does not make it wrong, it just makes things more interesting. Trying out the differences makes for an interesting and often humbling experience. Understanding often follows.

No prejudice begins at birth because we are all sinners although ignorance plays a part and it will only end when Jesus comes back. Even if you don't feel that you yourself are 100% prejudice free (which would be a rarity) you'll still experience prejudice towards you through out your lifetime in all types of situations.

Yes. There can not be prejudice with understanding. However we need to differentiate understanding from knowing. Knowing without understanding is ignorance.

Example, everyone knows Indians eat with their hands. This can create prejudice such as "Ah these Indians, they are uncivilized people. They eat with their hands when there are forks and spoon to be used". Th is is knowing without understanding. It is plain ignorance.

However if one were to understand the philosphical and cultural reasons behind the habit of eating with hands, the feeling of prejudice will not arise. Instead a sense of appreciation will arise.

Prejudice is a storage of false information, gathered in the mind by eyes, ears etc. senses and wrong thinking, which is collectively called ignorance. It ends up only by self realization, the truth.

Prejudice begins with ideas planted in our minds by our parents and society. a child does not know colour or racial difference, good or bad. It is the parents who teach him. then the society , takes over. sadly, religion which preaches about the Almighty, that all men are equal, takes a U turn and misleads, the trusting sheep.
The vital question is , from where do we get this 'understanding'? who will be our guiding star?

What about "learned ignorance" and "informed prejudices".

Ancient man without knowledge as compared to today's info-age was having less prejudices.

No, prejudice begins when you hate an entire group of people. Ignorance doesn't need to have anything to do with it, but it often does.
