Start a reward system for him. Lots of rewards in the beginning and then fewer and fewer. If he wants to watch a favorite program (ie Diego) he must go before. Have you tried putting tons of books in the bathroom? Some have put cherios in the toilet and that has encouraged some. I've heard of putting food coloring in the water and it'll change color but that's more so for when they pee!

Lots of encouragement will help too. Call grandma for ex when he has success. Tell everyone! Is there a cousin close to his age? Ask the cousin to help you by going to the bathroom in his presence.

Is he not old enough to go to school? If so, he's old enough to understand and if he's doing this he can't go to school! Use reasoning with him too. He's old enough!

Best of luck! He'll just decide one day that he wants to do it and that'll be the end of it!

I worked in the three year old room at a preschool for several years, and we had several kids with this problem. Is he wearing pull-ups? I found that they were not effective, as they feel the same as a diaper and your son will know this. Get a bunch of underwear and sweatpants, and be prepared for some messes in the beginning. Once he feels the discomfort of poop, it may help. (Some kids don't care at all about sitting in poop though, so this is just part of the solution.) Also, we would use rewards such as M&Ms, or stickers. Be careful about rewarding him with material things every time though, or he will come to expect it...also use tons and tons of verbal rewarding if he does poop in the toilet. And also, a lot of kids don't like the splashing from going in the toilet, so we would put toilet paper down first to prevent that. Then you have to watch for the behavior that generally precedes going in their pants - like backing into a corner, suddenly going quiet, or my favorite: "The Look". As soon as he starts to do these things, take him to the toilet. Giving him some books to look at while he does his business can help too. Good luck!

Promise something really cool.

My son got Smarties for a pee and I told him that when he has a #2, then he gets a whole Turtle to himself.

He really likes Turtles and I would never share them with him so this worked really well for me.
