Some states they stay with the car, some states they get turned in. Check with the DMV in your state to find out what to do with the plates. If you have to turn them in, make sure you get a receipt. This will relinquish any responsibility to the vehicle if the buyer doesn't title or register it in his name. If the plates go with the car, make copies of everything you give the person who buys your car. Front and back of the title that has your signature and his signature as buyer, any bill of sale you may make up for the sale. This way you have proof that you sold the car to someone and avoid any problems if he fails to title it in his name. Protect yourself no matter what happens to the plates.

If you live in California the license plate stays with the vehicle unless it’s a personal plate or an out of state plate. You can probably check with your Department of Motor vehicles on the web for your area.
