This is my only chocolate chip recipe. Nothing wrong with the original Toll House recipe, which is almost the same one posted by girl, but I think this is the best. It might be a little more expensive because of the cream of tartar, lots of butter, lots of vanilla, and lots of chocolate, but it's definitely worth it! I have kept the dough in the refrigerator for weeks, and it tastes the same as the day I made it.

3 c. all-purpose flour
3/4 t. salt
1/4 t. baking soda
1/8 t. cream of tartar
1 c. + 5 T. unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 c. granulated sugar
1 c. light brown sugar
2 large eggs, at room temperature
1 T. pure vanilla extract
13 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped into small chunks

Sift the flour, salt, baking soda, and cream of tartar into a medium bowl. Mix well and set aside.
Cream softened butter in a large bowl on low speed for 3 minutes.
Add granulated sugar and beat for 2 minutes.
Add brown sugar and beat for 2 minutes.
Blend in eggs, one at a time, mixing until incorporated.
Mix in vanilla extract. On low speed, gradually add dry ingredients in 3 batches.
Fold chocolate chunks into batter. For a softer, more tender cookie, refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours.
Scoop (1 tablespoon) onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 325 degree oven for 10-11 minutes.
