The first few months are very hard. The mother gets no sleep and is very tired from those 4 hour feedings. Be there to support the mother and give her a brake. Trust me! Sharing this responsibility will make you closer to your new child and the mother.

- Get sleep now
- Pack up on some snacks for you and your wife. Prepare meals ahead of time and put them in fridge or freezer as well.
You should have at least a weeks worth. Snacks should be energy snacks like peanut butter or apples etc...
- You'll need the baby basics: diapers and wipes, spit up cloth, onsies, bottle (if using and formula if using), baby blanket
- Prepare for wife being exhausted. Make sure she has comfortable place to sit and sleep. Also prepare for her being moody. And be aware of the signs of post partum depression which is very normal.
- If babies not sleeping with you you'll need baby monitor
- Contact numbers of friends and family who can support you, also emergency contact numbers and doctor's phone number for the millions of questions your likely to have.
- It only takes a day to get CPR and First Aid trained.
- Camera or Video Recorder
- Baby book (to record baby's firsts)
- Book about babies to refer to

OH and sorry for assuming your married. If not you'll still want to try and help out mother in ways listed above. The better relationship you have with her the better relationship you'll end up having with your baby.
Well hope this helps.

patience and to be there for every single moment of that childs life from first wet diaper to the child's first words. you dont want to miss these rare moments of your childs life. some guys find it silly stuff to be worrying about, but it really does make a difference. comfort the babys mother (even if you guys aren't together, mayeb still as a friend) and try to make things easier for her....after all she went through months of pain and more pain delivering the baby....i'm sure it'll make her really happy...

oh, i surely hope you'll be a TREMENDOUS help to your wife/gf at this most crucial moment... she'll need your support 100% :) as long as you support her by helping around and giving compliments and encouragement and don't complain while doing it, she'll be able to go through the toughest because she knows you're there for her and care for her and the baby... congrats on being a dad, but don't neglect your wife--she's the most important still...

from a family whose dad neglected his wife to the extent that we his children are negatively affected... don't ever neglect your wife...

A camera and LOTS of film. It is your job to make sure your new family gets plenty of bonding time without too many friends and relatives around. Congrats!

Congrats...

Just be there by her side. Get whatever they need....

I know being a new dad is not easy as you really need to run a lot (buyings, replenishings, etc). Keep your cool....

Just be there......be there for her and for the baby. Don't just shrug it off once it gets old or inconvenient. Even if you are not 'with' the Mom, be there to see and provide for that child.
