A straight punch is always more effective and faster. When you swing a punch, you lose power, you leave yourself open, and your accuracy is off.

Swing punches generate more power and impact But the leave the person throwing them open for short straight inside puches. If you throw straight punches you are not generating the power that can come from swinging punchues butyou are in a better position to defend yourself. Great boxers can throw both punches effectively. If you are boxing then you need to know when you are safe to Swing away. The best defensive fighters out there know exactly when the opponent is open for inside straight punches.
Hope this helps

straight punches are definitely faster: the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
The power depends on the delivery:
with a straight punch, the power reaches its target straight on, and therefore with more power as put out by the fist/arm/shoulder that delivers the punch.
A swing punch gathers additional power from a body twist, but it is, by itself, not as powerful as a straight punch.
The advantage of a swing punch is that you can by-pass a straight block with it.
power and speed are not the only factors in effectiveness. You also have to be able to 'land' your punch, and if there's a block in the way, you'll have to go around it.

I'm assuming when you say swing punches as to something such as the hook and uppercuts well th biggest advantage is the power they possess, thrown right they have your entire body weight behind them. Joe frazier had a deadly hook. Close in they are an effictive weopon in a boxers arsenal. However with some people they are slower on the infighting aspect of the sport. They are hard to evade since they are usually set up with the jab or straight right hand. If on the other hand if your referring to swinging when it comes out of outfield then they are easily evaded and lack total power. Now the straight punches the jab, Crosses now that's the meow if these are your set up punches like the jab straight rights. Fast and harder to evade quit coordinated. Muhammad had one of the finest straight punching techniques in the business.

straight punches often are delivered after closing distances and stepping in...but, a lot of major champions made a living with a good left and right hook, from Joe Fraizer to Mike Tyson (all hooks) Oscar D John Mugabi and many many champions put dinner on the table with good hooks following right crosses...

Straight shots get there quicker and with you hip into them do as much or more damage as hooks. A hook is the one you don't see coming, which is why so many impressive KO's come off hooks. Both get the job done, when thrown correctly.
