Because people need something to believe in! We have to think that their is something more than just the short existence that we have in this life. Some of our lives have such misery that if we didn't believe in the after life some would end it right now! Their has to be a God to create all of this! All the living things on this planet, all the planets and stars in the universe, heat, cold, gravitational forces, these things would take a God to make! Now where or not he will allow us to rise again after death is totally unknown!

Ernest Becker offers an explanation in his book: The Denial of Death.
He argues that the denial of death and similarly Earthly heroism is a reflex of the terror of death.
So yeah, we're afraid to die.
Non-existence of all of Earth prior to existence is definitely more difficult to comprehend.

Partly, I think, because so many people are caught up on whether a loved ones' or their own soul will live on or rise to higher plane of existence, or to heaven or hell.
I've lost a lot of loved ones in my life and for me, I don't have trouble with whether or not they'll go to heaven or hell, or if their' souls will live on (because I know that if anything, they'll live on in my heart). It's the fact that they are not here, plain and simple.
Good question.

Because after you get through talking to someone and they get blown up in an IED the next minute, you know then and there that it is some exisitence after this messed up life. I knew it as soon as it happened. There just has to be more than nothing

It is terrifying and incomprehensible for the "I" to imagine "not-I". You are your own oldest friend, and you view every aspect of the world in terms of yourself. It seems incomprehensible for there to not be a you. Continuity of self is the foundation upon which many people rest their entire lives; we learn over the course of our lives that our sensory perceptions, our dreams and visions, what others tell us, etc. are all fallible. So we retreat to the "I", the one unchanging element in our lives, the ever-present self. Few people, if anyone, can truly imagine their own nonexistence, much less accept it.
Thankfully, if there someday isn't a you, you'll never know it.

Because our conscious mind is all any of us really knows. It is how we know ourselves, and through it that we perceive the world. It is frightening to think that one day we will just cease to be, as those neurons stop firing. But you were not conscious before you were alive..you were nothing. You return to that same state after death.

People need to believe in something that reassures them, a crutch, they are scared and need to believe in something so they can make it through life. When of course the truth is that you just stop existing and that's it, game over.

There is no stratightforward answer to this question. People will believe what they want to believe and the only way for them to finally understand is for it to be too late. They will be thrown headfirst into something that they were not prepared for because they held no belief in nothing. Personally i believe that when you die your soul goes to paradise (heaven) or the abyss (hell) where you will spend eternity based on your actions and your belief on Earth.
