%%%Ask them if you can volunteer at your local shelter to help dogs, and learn more. (most shelters have a petting room, or a dog walking program, and need volunteers to just give animals attention)

%%%Study the books about choosing the right breed for your family, and comment on this often to them.

%%%Ask if you can give a dog from the shelter foster care for a week to see how a dogs fits in your family

%%%Do ALL chores as soon as asked

%%% Keep your room clean, and show that you are growing up and accepting responsibility

Then, if your parents don't allow you a dog, you need to realize that it is THEIR choice..They will be the ones ultimately and legally responsible for your pet..dogs live to be about 15 years old, with good nutrition..so your parents will have to face caring for the dog in its old age, if you are off to college or marry or live in a large city where you can't have a pet..
It costs at least $450 per year to keep a dog, for shots, worming, food, plus any emergency vet care...It is your parent's carpet to be ruined, furniture to be chewed, vacations to consider boarding, obedience classes to drive you and doggy to, sleepless nights to put up with....
Dogs are a whole LOT of problems and responsibility!

So, if they still say 'NO' you need to be mature and thoughtful enough to accept it...and to know they aren't refusing just out of meaness..

Prove you are responsible enough to care for it completely.

Many parents do not want to get a dog for an older child because they know that once the child is a certain age they are off to college or whatever and they are left with an animal with needs. But a small dog is a good idea because it needs less walking than a big hound.

Many times kids promise and never live up to their word. Prove your responsibility. Only you and he could discuss what might do this but approach him with some sort of game plan.

You might have to wait until you are adult on your own if he is adamantly set against the idea. it is his home and his rules after all. Good things are worth the wait!

Then it will be oooh so special for you.

Good luck.

Depends on how old you are....if you are old enough to take care of all the dog's needs then you can use that argument. However, Dad may not be able to take the expense at this time. Kids don't realize what responsibility and expense a pet can be.

Show him that you can feed, water, walk, pick up poo everyday and not let up on care.
You want it you have to care for it. Show him you can be responsible enough to care for a dog that will pee and poo in the floor until trained, that will cry at night if lonely, that will bark for no reason, and sooner or later become your best friend, lol.

Keep in mind that it is his rules, his home and you have to follow it. If he will be the one to provide the money for care and feeding then yeah you will have to come to an agreement with him.
Depending your age get a job to provide for your dog if he will allow you to get it. So you will be th provider of medical, food, grooming supplies.

well you can start by saying that you're aware of the responsibilities that you'll be taking in by getting a dog. Also talk about training and future plans...and the benefits of having a dog as a companion..like they can relieve stress etc.
good luck and remember, it's seriously like having a child, so be ready to take on the responsibilities.

how about doing some volunteer work at your local humane society, walking the dogs cleaning up there cages and helping out the vets this will show your dad you are ready for the responsibility, talk to him and tell him you are doing this to prove to him you are ready to care of a puppy and be responsible

Tell him you feel you need a companion in your life. Someone or something that you can be super close to. And, that you have decided it is to be either a doggy or a boyfriend.

He'll get you the dog.

You can do all the work in the house to convince him. You could also tell him that you would take full responsibility for it and would feed it, walk it, groom it etc...
