You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride,
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side,
You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair,
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir
You're gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You're gonna have to serve somebody.
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody.
~Bob Dylan~

Ah- more literalism - this time it's Dyan's lyrics instead of the Bible! Some of you folks must have done VERY badly at poetry and Shakespeare in English at high school! You can't seem to see past the most simplistic and superficial meaning of anything!

I am an atheist and I don't serve anyone, least of all someone I do not think exists (like the devil).
I know many christians believe that if I don't serve their god, I must serve satan. However, I do not control how they think. They can think whichever way makes them feel good about themselves. It's no skin off my back until they start voicing that opinion to me...I take it as an insult.

First and foremost, I serve my kids. I do this by raising them in a stable and loving home. Then I serve myself by working hard, and making a better life for myself. Plus, by doing this for myself, I am also making a better life for my children. Then I serve the rest of my family by being there for them when needed, and being there for all the fun we have together.
Other than that, I don't "serve" anyone else. I work, but I don't consider that serving in this sense of the word. I am paid to work, but serving comes with no payment in monetary terms.
I don't need some mythilogical deity to serve. I don't need some higher form of existence to feel like I am significant. I am me, I have a family, and I have the life I live. That is enough for me.

I don't take my personal beliefs from Bob Dylan, I am a bartender, I serve people. Otherwise I guess I really don't get life lessons from songs, and I really don't care about something I don't believe in anyways. Athiests don't need to serve, they can think for themselves.

I suppose I serve nature, like every other living thing. Living things evolve basically to make it to an age where they can reproduce, then eventually die and rot to nourish the earth. Its just a big cycle.

Note, he said "maybe". It's not just "the devil" or "the Lord". That's merely a lyrical contrast, like "a king or a pauper". There are other choices.
I prefer to serve humanity, as well as I can.
