That's a cat for you, what can I say? I have 3 - count 'em THREE - beds for my cat, and she chooses to sleep in my chair only. The only other time she's been remotely near one of her 'real' beds is when she is sleeping under it,not in it, lol.
On a more serious note, cats do like dark little places to sleep. Any snug little place where they can feel like they're 'hiding' appeals to them a lot. It makes them feel snug and secure.
If your cat insists on sleeping in the cardboard box and you're not planning on getting a new bed for it, just line the box with an old towel and I'm sure he'll be very happy :)

no answer to that only cats know but it is cheaper to buy a box than bed

thats just his personality....my cat sleeps on a rough cardboard kitty condo when she could sleep on my bed
