I think a big problem with online communications (IM, email, etc) is that we don't have the benefit of face to face communications. We can't see facial expressions, hear tone, etc. As a result, people have adopted the practice that typing in all capital letters means you are shouting. Depending the conversation, it could be a happy shout (like YAY I'm SO PROUD!) or a not-so-happy shout (like I HATE YOU!). I'm sure that in the future we'll have a way to resolve these problems, but until then, we have to be careful what and how we type.

There's nothing inherently rude about all caps, but in the culture of the Internet it is considered the equivalent of shouting. So by using all caps a person breaks the custom, with the same types of social consequences that happen when any custom is broken.

harder to read....
I think some people may use all caps because some are the seek & peck typers & it is easier & quicker than hitting the shift button when something needs to be capitalized. A form of shorthand? :)
it is really fast for some to type this way. because they don't have to use the shift button. but some may think it looks better to use all caps to be quick then lower case letters.
IT IS REALLY FAST FOR SOME TO TYPE THIS WAY. BECAUSE THEY DON'T....... :) A POSSIBLITY, ANYWAY. :)))
I think it's harder cuz I'm more use to using the shift button when needed. :) But someone not use to typing may find the other easier & quicker. ??? :)
Also, it does emphasize a word when you do all caps..... maybe some are yelling. But not all, cuz I believe there are seek & peckers still out there! :)

Capitals are generally use in many different ways. they are used to show importance, distinguish levels of names, Companies, to get a point accross, distinquish between sentences, paragraphs, titles, to give the reader a sence in change of mode, emotion, sorrow, grief, and so on . Yes it is also used to " YELL"."""""""""""
You may not care, but other people could be taking what you say completly wrong by the way you write. Especailly if you are writing to some one you love.
Sincerely yours,
Fred M. Hunter

In email and IM communication, it is the same as shouting. In a letter, it just shows a lack of sophistication and education. If you don't care about looking ignorant, than go right ahead and continue writing in this manner.

-It's considered shouting, and shouting generally is considered impolite.
Also there are two practical reasons:
-Capital letters are more alike, so even though they are larger, it's still harder to read.
-If you want to put EMPHASIS on a word, you can use caps just for that word... if it's all caps, you can't :)

If you use all capital letters you are shouting at the person. It is also harder to read.

Well, i don't know really. Maybe someone wants to give their point across or something, like if they are mad at the other person or tryin to tell them to LEAVE ME ALONE, but for some reason it doesn't seem to click to them and don't want to listen.

When you use all capital letters people think you are yelling at them. Silly I know. And ridiculous. Then if you are in a geriatric chat, they are insulted if you don't type in caps. Go figure.

PEOPLE HAVE CONSIDERED THIS TO BE SHOUTING. IN THE EARLY DAYS OF COMPUTING, ALL CAPS TOOK LESS MEMORY. NOW THAT COMPUTING HAS ADVANCED, IT IS NO PROBLEM TO STORE BOTH CAPITAL LETTERS AND LOWER CASE LETTERS, EVEN THOUGH IT TAKES TWICE THE STORAGE.
