So wouldn't it be a good idea to start at the very beginning of them to find out the truth? The Catholic Church.

You've got it! You might like the apologetics talks by John Martignoni, which can be found at www.biblechristiansociety.com.

"The Catholic Church" - just saying that you scared quite a few people. Because of the humans though, not the reality of being started by Jesus and the 12.
Humans through the years have ruined the lives of many, and returning to a Catholic life is physically/mentally impossible for them.
You are correct that the root of all Christian faiths is Catholic, but it's very inflammatory to mention this, I don't know why, but I don't have your courage to ask questions like this.
Peace.

The Catholic Church is arguably the beginning of apostasy, not true Christianity. True Christianity can be found only by careful study of the Bible WITHOUT someone interpreting it for you. Use your God- given reasoning ability along with a measure of holy spirit to interpret it. Don't automatically think that hell is a place of fiery, eternal torment just because that's what you were always told. Don't assume that your mom, dad, grandparents, or "Pastor Smith" was correct in everything they told you about God and the bible. There are passages in there that the average "Christian" would be stunned and or stumped by. If you can discern te truth of God's word by diligent study and THEN find a religious organization that follows it, THEN you know which one has the truth!

Religion is man reaching up to try and touch God.
Jesus is God reaching down and touching man. The beginning of Christianity begins with Christ, The birth of the "church" the followers of Christ, begin in the book of Acts. That is the original church. The very first one.

Your assumption that the catholic Church has the answers and must be right because it is supposedly the oldest is absurd.
The word of GOD is your guide to Christianity and that is the bible. Hopefully you will find people to help you understand that word but ultimately it will be up to you to figure it out. There are many denominations of the christian faith and all of them have some part of the message at their core. The real test is what YOU choose to believe and your keeping your covent with GOD.
I could spend a week talking about the strange history of the catholic church much of it is very twisted.

Don't listen to people ... LISTEN TO GOD

What? Christianity is one religion deary. We divide ourselves into sects and denominations, but the core belief is the same, that God took the form of a body, came to earth born without a father, lived among us with no sin, died on the cross and resurrected. Our truth comes from the Bible. Any person who does not profess these truths is NOT a Christian. Any other differences we have, such as church traditions or applications of truth to daily life do no make us a different religion.

I believe that God reveals his truth to us in his own way and no ones spiritual journey is the same. He has use for every branch of the Christian church, if he didn't he wouldn't have created them.

Wouldn't it be better to have just a general belief in 'something greater' than to stick to any one religion?

Or better yet, to be an Agnostic, because in all honesty, how can you KNOW you have the right belief?

This quote says it all:

"I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
...Stephen F Roberts

With so many religions saying that other religions are false, there are actually more people that discount religion than the converse.
