To make it easy, optical zoom lets you zoom into whatever without giving up any of the picture quality. As soon as the optical zoom is used up on your cam, digital zoom kicks in. From this point on, you begin to lose picture quality because all you camera is doing is expanding the image its processing. The more digital zoom you use, the more pixellated the image will be. So if you want high quality photos (and especially if you wanna do large prints) stay within the optical zoom range when shooting. Hope this helps.

no, that is not right. Optical zoom uses lenses to enlarge your picture which does not compromise the quality of your photo. Optical zoom is the type of zoom your old 35mm used. Using optical zoom will allow you to adjust your print size more without losing quality. Eventually you could make your picture too big and it could compromise quality. The quality of your pictures will also depend upon the format in which you save your pictures. The greater the compression, the more the quality of your photo will decrease.
Wikipedia has some good information about digital cameras. I found it helpful to read when trying to decide what camera to purchase.

Pictures from optical zoom are real pictures takes at the sense. Digital zoom is just the software that increase the size of the pictures, thus you feel you are closer to the subject.

Digital Zoom is useless. If you want to enlarge your photos digitally, do it in a photoshop type software on your PC. Cameras should only have optical zoom. Digital zoom is a very cheap feature to fool consumers. There's no real gain to it.

ONLY measure a camera by Optical Zoom. It's the only kind of zoom you should use.
Digital zoom is a useless feature and shouldn't be used. Maybe in the future they'll make it worthwhile.

the guy at the store is right, however digi-zoom isnt quite as bad as it used to be with the new technology. ok now: optical zoom is still the best (Sony`s new cams have 40 op.- 2000 digi.) digi zoom has improved thanx to "interpolation"., basically all it does is "crops" the edges of ur pic at the end of the opt. zoom. opt. zoom is 2 lenses being moved by a tiny motor. hope this helps u.

That is not right, but the guy has a bit of a point. The longer the zoom, the harder it is to hold steady. This is compounded by the slower apertures usually found at longer focal lengths on consumer digicams. So you may end up with blurry photos from camera movement or slow speed, but that has nothing to do with the pixel count.

Optical is better than digital, because the optical is the actual lens moving, and digital is withing the camera, so if you zoom in, optical isn't as blurry as digital

optical zoom is the distance between the two lenses, and does not affect your picture quality or print options. digital zoom takes the frame and zooms in on it (like in your photo editor when you zoom in) and can affect the picture quality and give you less options, unless you like pixelated 8x10's.

properly... Sony alpha is an fairly good digicam (it caries Minolta technologies!) yet i'm uncertain for its destiny for professional use (no longer basically the particular digicam yet all sony). once you purchase an SLR you decide on for the type that suits you appropriate(philosophy, layout, ergonomics). SLRs have an issue: in case you commence with a particular sort you "could desire to" stay in that kind. Lenses, flash lighting fixtures and each and all the kit made for an get entry to point SLR is precisely the comparable for the state-of-the-artwork digicam physique of the comparable enterprise. If I have been you i could purchase between the three significant manufacturers (Olympus, Nikon and Cannon have an prolonged custom in photographs) reckoning on the appropriate furnish it rather is: which furnish provides greater desirable than one lenses and/or different kit. that is a real investment. i'm hoping that I helped you. For photograph utility i'm sorry yet i'm no longer the the appropriate option guy or woman.
