I was leaving this community college yesterday after visiting some friends, and we were walking out together, and they still had somethings up from Black History Month, and I go " I think they can take that down, February is over"

They all look at me and they go "the black information guy was back there" (the person whom sits at the information desk).

*i dunno if it was my tone or something...i was joking about it...i would have said something if they had something up that was out dated for something else...like something for elections and it was past elections*
*note i didn't say this loudly...just to my friends*

deej, my family takes down the christmas tree the day after christmas and everything else but the nativity scene....and where i work at, we take things down ASAP...we can't stand to have things up longer than we have to. I always complain about it...and i get a kick out of getting to rip it down.

*i did go read what they had up about Black History Month...and i don't even go to that college anymore...they had things up about the NAACP and other things (i have such horrible memory right now thats all i can remember that was up....i need to get on new meds....anyways).....

in my soc. class i was one of the only ones to get everything right about Rosa Parks on a test....because no one in the class knew anything about her...and the teacher was mad....well some of us did....including myself....so she added the questions on there...

First off, what you said was neither racist nor insensitive. It was simply a valid observation.

Second, I doubt any black person would be offended. They have to live with enough real racism to be bothered by an innocent, valid observation.

Third, your friends were trying to show how racially PC they are. In reality your friends are anything but. You're an easy target - single out a friend who won't make a scene defending her statement, correct her and so feel morally superior. In reality they've done nothing. Did ANY of them go out and learn ONE new fact about a great black scholar, activist, musician, theorist, leader? Or black history? Black roots? Anything?? We're not even talking about actively fighting racism in this country - did they just go and learn anything new about black culture at all? I doubt it - much easier to pick on you and call it a day.

Your friends are hypocritical and insensitive, not you. You have foolish friends.

Not racist, but I think you are a bit picky if you complain about stuff just one or two days after the month/event/whatever is over. People are very busy and many people have other priorities. If you want to take your Christmas tree down the 26th, by all means do so, but don't get on other people's case so soon. If it's a nice poster, I would keep it up until I had another event coming up that I needed the space for, even if it was months later. I also keep my tree up until late January 'cause it's just so pretty I love looking at it! I also turn my calender over whenever I get around to it, usually several days into the next month. Not everyone has this pet peeve for outdated stuff, what you do with your own stuff is your business but try to live & let live a bit more.

I guess technically no, but I bet you don't say anything when you see Christmas decorations on December 26th, or Valentine's Day stuff on February 15. Your comment just makes it seem like you were counting down the days until the end of Black History Month, and it bothered you that people didn't stop observing it the moment February ended.

Hell no it wasn't racist. I'm a African-American man and zen hit the nail on the head. I am so sick of white people tap dancing around "PC" issues. GO OUT AND LEARN WHAT GREAT AFRICAN-AMERICAN MEN AND WOMEN HAVE DONE FOR THE WORLD IF YOU CARE THAT MUCH!!! White people are far more interested in making PC comments than learning anything about African American culture. Ignorance is not going to solved by playing super PC and thinking you've done all you can.

Tasha, you need to grow up girl.

I don't think your comment was racist. Sounds like your friends are very sensitive to racial issues though, maybe a little too sensitive! An innocent remark about failure to remove dated advertisements isn't enough to warrant being paranoid about political correctness!

This month is *Women's History* month... if I heard you make the same type comment after the first of April, I wouldn't accuse you of being sexually biased! So, no worries.... you're good!

:D

No it wasn't racist, but as a black person I know some people would have thought it was, because racism is a very sensitive subject. It's something you would never understand unless you are in that persons shoes, thats why I hate when people say get over it. Say for instance, there was a cinco de mayo poster up, and I said it's May 6 they can take that down now. That would probably offend someone, and I think when it comes to race the best thing to do is watch very careful what you say.

I think there's a little truth in every "joke" but I also think EVERYONE makes insensitive comments about other races but that doesn't automatically make you racist against that group of people, for instance when your friends called him the "black information guy" instead of just the "information guy." I'm pretty sure you saw he was black! I think what you said was more insensitive than racist.

you're astounding about that. i visit't inform you approaches people I easily have stated for the failings they have suggested and obviously they save coming decrease back and yet i'm getting a caution because i requested people how they the position doing. As demanding via the indisputable fact that is, most suitable guess is merely to push aside them.

February WAS over and they probably needed to take it down to make room for the White History Month posters (which is in March through January). You were not racist at all.

Many times in life we say things that are not understood the way we meant them.

Probably people knew this guy could be sensitive to comments.

Feb. is over - that's real. Awareness of others feelings - you wouldn't be asking this question if you weren't sensitive to others.
