Merlot is a grape, just like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir or Shiraz. If you really like merlot, try some of the Bordeaux wines specifically from St. Emilion and Pomerol. In St. Emilion the merlot is usually blended with cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. They tend to be a little more structured and not as jammy as California merlot and pair better with foods.

Merlot wine is called Merlot because it is made from a grape variety called Merlot. There are many hundreds of different grape varieties used for wine making and each has its own taste characteristics.

Well acutally, Merlot is a type of grape itself. But what make a Merlot wine unique is its blend of plum, berry, and currants.
