We own nothing. Our taxes pay for the land and the structures built on that land, but trust me when 15 men in black come running into your house with M5s screaming get down they own it all. It's called eminent domain, an absolute crime, but they still do it.
So you have 2 choices: a) let them take it, b) buy guns and kill them all.

it is you who owns the house on title and deed, UNTIL such time that the county sells it for back taxes. then the buyer owns it.
in some states, there is a short time period called the redemption period. that is the time that you have to pay off those taxes in full before the buyer takes deed to your house. call your real estate attorney.

The government will own it and they will sell it to get the costs back unless you can pay what you owe.
They will take the clothes off your back to get what you owe.
