Are you asking me what I would do? or are you searching for ideas on what you can do. either way it is to volunteer for just about anything your local government may need. this is to get experience in knowing how government actually works or should work. Every City government has differing ways in running a city, solely depending on its citizens for help and being a volunteer is rewarding in many ways. you have the right state of mind and have good sense being interested in community.
Volunteer at a elderly homes and hear some neat experiences of the individuals, you don't need to change bedpans either, just be someone to talk with you will again have a rewarding experience. Do you know where I am going with this?
And if you have the mind for it Hospice care is helping out in a big way. Be an example in respecting those who are the elders. I was blown away when two boys went out of their way to help me carry bags of groceries to my car and were so polite in doing so,I could have done this myself but perhaps.....they were thinking along the same lines as your are. Who knows, you may become the president

It depends on the need of the community. Working in the community can be very helpful to the community and to yourself by sharing knowledge, expertise and so on. It is always the both side approach for better things.

You can volunteer in your community. Everyone can make a difference, no matter how young or old.
I would suggest starting by contacting your local volunteer center. They can connect you with organizations or volunteer projects that meet real community needs. Through my volunteer center, I've worked with volunteers as young as 5 years old. I've tutored children at the local library, worked at the food bank packaging and sorting food for the hungry, fed the homeless by serving meals, worked at the local children's shelter by playing with the children, and many other projects.
You can find your local volunteer center through the following links:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm
Volunteer centers specialize in finding projects in your local community by working with local agencies to provide one-time, short-term, or long-term projects.
