Try this article - down the bottom there is a section about teaching your dog to ring a bell to let you know he/she wants to go out - http://www.dog-obedience-training-review.com/puppy-house-training.html

Good luck!

The best way I found is to take your puppy outside alot and yes I used the training where you wipe up the pee or poop and place it outside and it does work. but please DO NOT rub his nose in it. let him sniff it and then praise him alot. Dogs will go back to where they have gone before. With my beagle i was always asking "do you have to do your pee " and take her right outside. That way she learned the word pee with going outside. When I got her outside I would tell her" go do your pee." And stay with her until she did. Praise her and give her a little treat. Some puppies don't get control of there badders until 6 7 months. Everyone is differant. Good luck to you and your puppy

He definatly needs to be trained. If you have newspapers or peepee pads take the wet ones and rub them outside on the grass or wherever you want the dog to pee. Likewise take some of the poop and put it outside. Take the dog outside and stick his nose in his excriments and praise him.....choose a word....potty or goodboyoutside. and use the word or phrase to make the dog relate to going potty. then take the dog outside every 15 minutes in hopes to let him learn to potty.

Make sure you give him plenty of praise and or a doogie treat when he goes potty outside. Make it worth his while to learn to to potty. When inside the doggie has an accident in a low firm voice say NO.

Take the puppy to the door and say potty (or whatever word you choose to word)

He will start to rellate the door to going outside.

Spend some time working on this with the puppy. You will both be happier in the long run.

We have a bell tied to the door that we let our dog out of. It's just tied on a string and attached to the handle and is long enough for her to hit with her nose. We hear the bell, we know she needs to go.

What I did to teach her to use it was take her to the door, ring the bell and then ask "Do you have to go out?" and then open the door. I would stand there and watch to make sure that she went and when she came in, she was given lots of praise and a treat. After doing this a dozen times, she started to get the idea. Now we have no problems. She just rings the bell. At 5 months, your pups bladder should be mature enough for him to have control.

try putting a potty pad somewhere in the house. when he gets used to going on that slowly pull it a few feet at a time closer towards the door. he should follow it. once he is using the pad by the door, remove the pad and with hope and your attention he should go by the door when he has to go looking for the pad, then take him outside, instruct him to go, and praise like crazy.

also try putting a bell on the door. everytime you go outside stop and ring the bell so he associates the bell with going outside. some dogs pick up on this fast and they will go up and ring the bell with their nose or foot meaning they have to go outside. good luck!
