It's important to remember that people who have good emotional health sometimes have emotional problems or mental illness. Mental illness often has a physical cause, such as a chemical imbalance in the brain. Stress and problems with family, work or school can sometimes trigger mental illness or make it worse. However, people who are emotionally healthy have learned ways to cope with stress and problems. They know when they need to seek help from their doctor or a counselor.
Your body responds to stress by making stress hormones. These hormones help your body respond to situations of extreme need. But when your body makes too many of these hormones for a long period of time, the hormones wear down your body -- and your emotions. People who are under stress a lot of are often emotional, anxious, irritable and even depressed.
If possible, try to change the situation that is causing your stress. Relaxation methods, such as deep breathing and meditation, and exercise are also useful ways to cope with stress.

Stress is the number 1 killer in the US. It causes a multitude of illnesses- heart disease/heart attacks/mental disorders/hormone imbalances/kidney dysfunction...when your body is over stressed it produces too much cortisol and insulin- which can also lead to diabetes and certain cancers....that is why there are so many Americans that have cancer and heart disease and other illnesses compared to other countries. WE do not adhere to a 40 hr work week. WE have both parents working and taking care of the children is an after hours and weekend duty along with taking care of our homes........way too much stress---We should be more like the europeans who hire people to tend to the repairs and daily cares of their home and children and take 2 hour lunches!

Stress plays a big factor in your immune system function by suppressing the T-cells and natural killer cells. Investigate ways of managing stress and if the relationship is unhealthy, get out.

They say that people who are care givers to loved ones get sick after the loved one dies. I believe it. You just get worn down and your immune system is affected too.
