Not only do we have cows all around the islands but we have surfing goats on Maui!

Surfing Goat Dairy
As you weave your way out of the sugarcane fields lining the slopes of Maui's Haleakala volcano, you come upon the lush green pastures of the Surfing Goat Dairy, Hawaii's newest caprine addition. Owned and operated by German expatriates Thomas and Eva Kafsack, Surfing Goat Dairy represents one of only two goat dairies in the state. It is located on 42 acres with almost two-thirds dedicated as pasture, giving the Dairy's three bucks and over than 80 does plenty of space to roam and forage. Found on the leeward side of the mountain, the Dairy is protected from Hawaii's perennial trade winds, which comes as both a curse and a blessing. On one hand, the goats enjoy the resulting dry climate, with only an occasional winter rain storm; yet, on the other hand, the costs for underground irrigation to maintain the grass on 25 acres of pasture can be substantial, especially during the summer.

And yes, dairy is expensive in Hawai'i, as are all groceries. Don't forget that Hawai'i is the most remote archipelago in the world and we import up to 80%+ of our foodstuffs. You gotta shop around and read the weekly ads to find what is on sale, or as the other responder suggested, go to costco, sam's club, walmart, etc.

For all of those who are saying that there are no dairy cattle in Hawaii, have none of you ever heard of Meadow Gold? Yes, there are cows in Hawaii, both beef and dairy, and $8.00 milk was probably in Waikiki at either the ABC store, the Handi-Pantry or some other store tailored towards ripping off tourists.

Who are these Yahooers ? who think we have no dairy on the islands of Hawaii !
It wasn't' that long ago that Hawaii had the largest single ownership of a ranch throughout the entire USA.
Sure were loaded with tourist and new arrivals moving here and the cattle being moved elsewhere but we still have dairies !
The Na'alehu Dairy produces most of the milk on the Island. This is a picturesque area with black & white dairy cows grazing in brilliant green pastures that end in spectacular ocean cliffs.

The Big Island has the largest cattle Ranch in the nation. (Parker Ranch) raised for beef. I do not know of any dairy farms here that is why our Milk prices are ridiculous. A gallon typically costs anywhere from 4.99 to 7.99 depending on where you buy it.

Okay so I stand corrected about dairy cows....geesh. I have lived here for 6 years and if it is so readily available tell me why meadow gold and Naalahus is so expensive......

Yes, there are cows, but I do not think the average price of milk is $8.00 (if you mean per gallon). You could always find somewhere where it would be $3.00 per gallon.
