We live in a society where it seems to be impolite to make eye contact with strangers. Therefore, most people walk with their heads down avoiding any kind of communication with unknown persons.

It's funny, I think it happens to be where you are at a certain time, you can start to get clusters of happy or disenfranchised people in certain areas.
Sometimes a posting on an internet site can make a difference!
I was leaving the poolhall the other day, hopped in my truck and noticed an older lady trying to push her battery-operated lil 4wheel thing (not a wheelchair but those things they buzz down the sidewalk in) by pushing with her feet while she sat. As I drove away I thought of a post I had just read the other day asking why noone helped each other anymore, so peeled around the block and got out. Turns out she was disabled to the point she couldn't walk at all, and the battery in that vehicle had died. Pushed her 3 blocks into her apartment lobby, rang the supervisor and bailed out.
So, who knows, perhaps you get the stare this time, but the next opportunity they won't be so shocked and will respond to whoever says Hi?
Have a good one :)

I think it depends on where you live. I'm from Wisconsin and so people are usually pretty friendly there. Everybody says 'Hi' to each other. I live in Virginia now, but I still notice people still saying
'Hi' to each other, but maybe I'm the only one. Now that I think about it I think I might be the initiator.

I still say hi to people and open doors for women. Most people will smile back or at least say thank you. Most people OVER age 25 that is.
