I think one thing people over look is that depression is often a selfish thing, please don't misunderstand me, some people need professional help, but most just need to get out and do something kind and helpful for someone else, go serve together at a soup kitchen, find an elderly couple in your neighborhood and bake them a cake, find a widow and bring her some flowers, get them thinking of others and serving others, that's the best way

well, that depends.
Are they aware they have depression?
Do they want help?
All one can do is listen and let them talk through their issues.
Identifying the cause of the depression is often half the battle won.
Strategies to cope are useful, as is reassurance, acknowledgment of their pain and being a friend.
An action plan can then be put into place, to improve the situation the person finds himself in. Small steps which can be easily attained.
ALCOHOL IS NOT.
Once a certain stage is reached, medication will help in conjunction with counselling. But there are a lot of rubbish counsellors out there, often it's trial and error to find someone they like and trust.
Ultimately, they must be willing to seek help and willing to change their circumstances.
Unfortunately, a few enjoy the attention they receive and keep manipulating themselves to remain in that state.
Basically, just be there when they need you.

There are many degrees of depression. Family and friends may be able to help those with mild depression just by listening. Don't try to give advice. You might ask "What do you think you should do? What would make you feel better? Allow the person who is depressed think out the situation.
I was diagnosed with severe depression, anxiety, and homicidal tendencies. I recognized that I was not only a danger to others, but a danger to myself. I sought psychiatrict help, was put on medication (which I took for over three years), and am now able to accept many of life's situations.
Depression can overtake anyone; but, recognizing and seeking help is paramount. Diabetes is a disease that can be treated; depression is a disease that can be treated.
