Why does it seem that there is such a HUGE amount of people being diagnosed for depression? It seems so weird to me. I am one of them and hate it controlling my life. Why are so many more people depressed now more than ever?

50 years ago, you would have been sent to the mental institution. I'm kinda glad we are figuring it out.

Me too, but there isn't an influx of depressed people- it is finally being accepted and people are no longer ashamed to seek help and therapy---sort of coming out of the closet. Just look at all the TV commercials for depression medicines--there weren't any 10-25 years ago, maybe not even 5 years ago. It is an acceptable problem that needs medical attention and I'm glad that there are meds that can help me,and you should be glad too, just think of how unstable you were before you received meds? Good luck to you- and by the way, just because you're on them now doesn't mean you will be forever, unless you're bipolar like me.

Well, coz we are genetically designed to live in a community and bond with each other. Remember there used to be a time when one person in a community is in trouble, the whole community is ready to help? But we no longer have communities like that anymore nor any experience like that (e.g. villages, fighting evil side by side in an army or even a big close family...) We are being so independent from each other. We pay each other for services. We owe no one. We have fewer friends. We now have to pay a professional so that we get an hour of time to talk to someone who actually listens. The bonds we need to be mentally healthy are severed, and now we hope to fix it with chemicals and "fake" it. Well, it only gets worse. We have lived in a community for thousands of years and only these couple hundred years is when we start to be independent, and become individuals. Do you think we can just adapt that quickly?

Because it's easier to diagnose and treat.
We now understand that depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, which we didn't know before the 1990s.
Congratulations on seeking and following your treatment!!!

please do not take this the wrong way - i have had problems with depression too so i know how it is - but in my opinion - i think that doctors are quick to label you as depressed sometimes - when small simple little things like making some changes in your life could be all you need

there are more things people have to worry about now a days than there was before. another thing is that we live in a more hectic life style that before. always on the run. always striving to do better and when we fail things aren't pretty.

A drugged population is a cotrollable population.....there's money to be made...there's a (fill in blank) disorder for everything it seems these days.
