I recently moved out of state and need to switch my drivers license. According to the state DMV a current, valid license is needed or a copy of my driving record. Well, I just happened to notice that my license expired the beginning of January. I'm in a bit of panic since I have to take time off from work to go to the DMV and I don't want to waste my time if they're just going to turn me away. Oh, they also said that I don't have to take a test as long as the license hasn't been expired for over a year. So can anyone give me their opinion on what I should expect?

An invalide license is 1) one that is suspended/revoked, 2) altered, 3) in your case, expired. You are not licensed to drive a vehicle and I do hope you're not.

You should expect to take any and all tests. You should expect to be at the DMV for quite awhile. You should expect to have all the documentation necessary for a new license to be issued available, i.e. social security card, birth certificate, divorce/marriage papers. You should expect this to be a serious pain in the rear....you should not expect it to go smoothly. You should expect one DMV worker will give you completely different information than the one you last spoke with.

Your license is not valid, if it has been only a month or two you will probably be able to use it,probably but I would call first. Same with the drive test, the quicker you get in there, the better it will be.

Sounds like you're fine. You're not expired for more than a year and as long as the liscense hasn't been suspended or isn't being held in court, you're good to go! You didn't mention the state you're in to be sure of laws, but if you're that uneasy about it, why not call and ask?
