what will happen if a future soldier fail to report to bct.?

A friend of my son's never reported to MEPS (the processing station before you go to BCT). Apparently he just decided the Army was not for him. The Army tried to contact him several times without results, and eventually--after about three months--they gave him a general discharge. I'm not saying that this is what will happen in every situation, just relating what happened with this guy.
