I have a 1yr old Great Dane Boxer mix, he's huge and getting bigger everyday. My problem with getting anouther dog is that I dont really want another one as big as he is. I would really like to have a small or mid size dog for him to play with. But I dont want him to pummel the other dog to death, and I dont want to get something that will pummel my 4yr old daughter to death. I'm not looking to get a pure breed. Just your average pound puppy, I know were to find out about differnt pure breeds and there tempermats.
I would like to know from people about pound puppys... And what kind of pound puppy I should get.

I have a schipperke (skip er kee). She is 1 year old, solid black and has no tail. She is a great dog. We bought her and brought her home to my other dog and she has adapted well to her and all the family canines. She is excitable and loves everyone (especially children) She is very fast and agile. The bigger dogs don't stand a chance with her. They can't catch her, but they enjoy the chase and so does she. She is small enough to stay indoors or big enough for outdoors unless you live in an arctic climate. They typically reach 12-18 lbs and stand around 18 - 20 inches tall. Purebreeds are all black. They look like little wolves. Everyone loves the way she looks. I have had all kinds of dogs and we get more compliments about her than any other. Men think she looks TUFF. I know you said you weren't interested in your dog being a purebred, but they have all kinds of animal rescue sites on the internet. Most of these sites are designated to purebreds because people are so passionate about certain breeds and they want them to have a good home. The adoption fee is minimal and you can get a really expensive dog at an affordable price. I have seen some as affordable as the local pounds adoption fee. I hope whatever breed you get you will try to adopt one that is already in need of a good home. Good luck.

My boss has three dogs, two are big dogs (one is an alaskan malamute mix) and they are best friends with her Chihuahua. I work in a vet office and what's funny is that some of the smaller dogs think they could take on anything, while some of the bigger dogs get a little nervous around others. I think your dog would most likely get along just fine with a smaller dog and if nothing else, I think most, if not all shelters have a time frame in which you can return the dog if it doesn't work out.
As far as what puppy to get, it's really up to you as to what kind of dog you want or can handle. My mom's dog was a pound puppy and she's about the best and sweetest dog we've ever had. I think it's great that you are considering a pound puppy; they just might be the best dog you ever own and you're also saving their life! Whatever you decide, I hope it works out!

at some shelters, you can bring your dog in to see how it reacts to your new dog and if they dont get along, its not the right dog for you. Also, small dogs think they have more power and will probably terrorize your great dane boxer mix, no joke. Little dogs think they have all the power so try to get a mid-size dog like a lab or something is always nice!! have funn!

A shepherd mix?
or another boxer mix
a rottie mix...
or a beagle..they are good family pets....my 4 yr daughter keeps asking for one...lol..but we have 2 big dogs in an apartment right now so i keep telling her when we move..sorry off subject... but a beagle should be able to hold its own with a dane mix.
i'd just go look at the shelter and let ur daughter help...
i'm sure u know to look on petfinder.com.
i wouldn't go to small.

good luck!
