Bipolar disorder and "manic depression" are the same condition. It is characterized by two phases. There is a "manic" phase where a person may have racing thoughts, a decreased need for sleep, impulsive behavior, and a sense that they can do anything. Others may also tell that person that they're talking fast. These phases, in order to fit the criteria for psychiatry, must last about 5-7 days. The other part of the disorder is the depression phases, which include feeling extremely sad, increased sleep, loss if interest in your previous activities, decreased appetite, etc. If you are experiencing these symptoms PLEASE see your doctor and/or a psychiatrist. Generally this condition is treated with Lithium or Depakote, which we call "mood stabilizers". A doctor should oversee your medications because using a straight antidepressant can actually cause a "manic" phase as I talked about above. The extended release form of Depakote is less associated with weight gain than the shorter acting formulation, but definitely tell your doctor that this is a concern you have.

First, google those conditions. You will find more info than you will ever need by doing that. Second, see a doctor if you are concerned that you have one of these conditions. I have heard that Wellbutrin is one of the better antidepressants for not gaining weight, 'cause that certainly can be a side effect of some ADs. Tell your Dr. point blank that you don't want to gain weight bc of meds. Also, even if you gain a little - and it would probably be very little, if any - your mental health matters more than a few extra pounds. Good luck!

Please see a medical professional about this. There are different types of meds and most are hard to balance. Bipolar disorder can be tricky to deal with, even more so than unipolar, or major depression. Meds must be regulated constantly. Bipolar disorder and manic depressive are the same mental disorder....now bipolar is the more preferred name. Good luck. Please help yourself and don't worry about your weight.

Their is also rapid mood swing and many more, and their are many meds for it and would be better to see a doctor becuase diffrent meds work with diffrent people and they need to see if the meds will work with the chemicals in your body.
