i am going to have to get oral surgery to fix an open bite and my orthodontist said that i'll have to get braces BACK on to do the surgery. he didn't really explain why and i'm confused. why on earth would you have to get braces to get jaw surgery. especialy cause i've already had braces and my teeth are perfectly straight already. he said they'd have to be on for about 6 months after the surgery. does anyone know anything about this?

OPEN BITES HAVE A VERY NOTORIOUS TENDENCY TO RELAPSE AND THUS SOME CASES NEED SURGERY TO FIX THE PROBLEM BETTER. THE BRACES ARE NEED SO THAT YOU CAN WEAR ELASTICS ON TO THEM AFTER YOUR SURGERY AND SO THAT THE SURGEONS CAN POSITION THE JAWS IN A GOOD POSITION. IF SURGERY IS DONE WITHOUT THE BRACES, IT WILL POSE A PROBLEM AFTERWARDS TO HOOK ELASTICS AND TO ASSIT IN THE SEGMENTS OF JAWS TO HEAL IN THEIR PROPER POSITIONS. IF YOU ARE CONFUSED I THINK YOU SHOULD ASK YOUR DR TO CLARIFY THINGS FOR YOU...THAT IS WHY THEY ARE THERE, DONT FEEL SHY, YOU PAY FOR A SERVICE AND YOU MUST MAKE USE OF IT.

look into getting the 6 month smile. Google it... would not take almost as long as classic braces. it is for elegance restoration purely, however, so in case you like a considerable jaw restoration then you definately will could bypass during the traditional braces direction. My braces have been 3000$
