"Merry meet" means simply that -- we meet happily.

"Blessed be" means, be blessed. (It is also sometimes used in ritual in the same context that "amen" serves in some other religions, although "so mote it be" is more commonly used.)

They're ways of greeting other Wiccans within the context of the faith. You'll also often see "merry part" used... and by now, I'm sure you can guess what THAT means. ;-)

Merry Meet and Blessed Be are both specific things from the Wiccan liturgy.

To tell a person "Blessed Be," for example, and not be implying the whole of the Five-fold kiss is very silly.

There is a HUGE knowledge gap in Wicca, with people who know their stuff and people who don't. These two greetings went from meaning something specific to a way for Wiccan newblets to go "look at me, I'm Wiccan."

Neither is "old English."

For the same reason I might great a fellow Asatruar with "Hail" or "Heilsa".

It's just a Wiccan greeting. Much like how Christians will tell someone "God Bless".

because its Olde English and the guy who thought up the 'religion' thought it would be a good greeting. sadly, like his religion it just sounds dumb. And before you get on my back for being a bigot, My grandmother was a witch, and the local wiccans who couldn't spell their way out ofa wetpaper bag denied her entrance to their 'coven' because she didn't follow the book they did

For the same reason you say hello and Good bye.

They're called greetings. Nothing more, nothing less.
