Light jogging, hiking, etc, reaches my heartrate into the mid 180's when it should only be around 170 (supposedly). What is (or could be) causing this and/or is it bad?

PS My resting HR is about 55-65 on average if that makes a difference.

Until you build up stamina your heart rate will be a little high. You have to do a little more conditioning. You may want to do some explosive breathing before jogging or exercising. Inhale rapidly through your nose to your fullest capacity. Hold your breath for a slow count of eight. Expel your breath completely in an explosive rush and suck in your gut to remove as much air from your lungs as possible. Do this eight to ten times. You are oxygenating your blood ahead of time so your heart won't have to work as hard. Talk to your doctor before you do this. If you don't do it correctly you could hyper-ventilate, bad idea. Also, have you had a blood test lately? Low red blood cell count can cause poor oxygenation of the blood when you are doing cardio exercises. If this happens only once a month or so, it's a female thing and you may need more iron in your diet. If it happens all the time, you may want to check in with your physician.

Good luck, hope this helps.

Outside of poor conditioning, I have no idea. That's mighty high. More importantly, what's your blood pressure when your heart is pumping that fast? If your systolic is anywhere close to 180, you need to be more careful. You should probably keep your heartrate under 140 until you build up more stamina.
