i guess i should of been clearer, in the recipe it said ox's tails are no longer available! but it didn't give the substitute for it. THAT'S what i meant. i just assumed it was known that tails from an ox were not available.

ok i found out that the do not sell oxtails from oxen anymore! it's very rare in most supermarkets. when a recipe calls for oxtails they mean from cattle! and the butcher will give you a similiar piece like that from an oxen. but its NOT from an oxen. geesh, i had to answer my own question lmao

Oxtails that they sell in the store are from cows. I see them in all the supermarkets I go to. I use them often and they are very expensive!

An oxtail is an ox tail - the tail of an ox (or probably steer). You can find them in meat markets or in the meat section of better grocery stores.

They are real tails from real oxen (catch the ox and then cut off it's tail), usually used in german recipies for soup or stews.

As far as I know, it is sliced ox tail. At least that is what my mom told me. I substitute stewing beef or chicken thighs. Guess I'm a little squeamish that way.
